I designed a relief road for a town from planning through modelling, public consultation where we show everyone what we are thinking and then led the team doing the preliminary design. The relief road joined to the motorway too and I had to design a large new junction on the motorway.

Good question – thanks! and I’m finding it hard to answer… because I’ve worked on lots of different projects, many where we solved some big problems or designed parts/wings that were really neat. I also think that getting my PhD completed was a really big achievement for me personally. In my PhD research, I wrote a computer program that optimises a complex wing design with composite materials. The aim was to minimise the wing weight, while also achieving the minimum design requirements, in terms of wing strength and aerodynamic performance. The program has to run lots of numerical wing models, for example to check that the wing doesn’t bend too much when the aircraft flies through some turbulence. I was able to publish several papers in world-class research journals, and I can probably say that I am now part of a small group of worldwide experts on the topic.
