• Question: How does bridges hold up cars

      Bridges transfer the weight of the road and cars through the ‘deck’ of the bridge (the flat, horizontal part) to the columns down into the ground and the rock beneath. It is the ground beneath the bridge that holds it up really (and some strong joints in the roadway).
